Independent Prescribing Course Structure
Course Duration: Accredited independent prescribing courses typically take 6 months to complete.
Part-Time Delivery: The program is designed for
working professionals and offered on a part-time basis. This often involves a combination of:
Face-to-Face Teaching
Sessions: These sessions are typically held one day per week and provide opportunities for interactive learning and discussion with instructors and peers.
Self-Directed Study: You will also be expected to dedicate time to independent study to solidify your understanding of the course materials.
Flexibility and Minimum Requirements:
While some universities may offer courses with a larger distance learning component, all accredited programs will involve a minimum of 26 days of in-person teaching and learning activities.
In addition to classroom learning, pharmacists must successfully complete at least 12 days (90 hours) of supervised learning in a practice setting. This practical experience is conducted under the guidance of a designated prescribing practitioner (DPP).
Streamlined Entry Process: Effective October 1, 2022, the entry requirements for independent prescribing courses have been revised by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). This change eliminates the previous requirement of two years'
experience in a specific clinical area.
Finding the Latest Requirements:
While our website outlines the GPhC's standards for pharmacist independent prescriber education and training, some courses accredited before October 1, 2022, might still operate under the older standards.
To ensure you meet the most current requirements, we recommend directly contacting your preferred program provider for their specific entry criteria.
General Entry Considerations:
Course providers may have additional entry requirements beyond the GPhC standards.
By checking directly with the program provider, you'll gain the most up-to-date and accurate information for applying.
We understand choosing a
specific scope of practice can be a challenge. Here's how we can help:
Popular Starting Points: Consider areas you have experience or interest in, such as Asthma, Diabetes or Hypertension. These are commonly chosen areas of practice for independent prescribers.
Flexibility During the Course: While universities often request a scope of practice declaration during application, some programs allow changes after the program begins (subject to university approval).
Guidance and Support: If you're still struggling to identify a specific area of practice, our team of FindMyDPP advisors is here to assist you. These experienced professionals can offer:
Valuable Insights: Gain fresh perspectives and explore potential areas of specialisation that align with your skills and interests.
Targeted Resources: Receive access to relevant resources and information to help you make an informed decision.
Career-Focused Guidance: Our advisors can guide you in selecting a scope of practice that complements your long-term career goals.
As a requirement for processing your application, this registration fee must be paid. This fee covers the administrative costs associated with reviewing and processing applications. By paying the registration fee, you can ensure your application will be efficiently processed and evaluated.
